Canyonland Grotto, Utah
Photograph by Walter Meayers Edwards

A vaulted grotto with a skylight shelters the ruins of cliff dwellings. The Anasazi, or Ancient Ones, tilled corn in the valley below and retreated to the heights at night. Whether fleeing enemies or a prolonged and widespread drought, they disappeared from Utah by about 1300. This canyon, near Salt Creek in Utah's Canyonlands National Park, also shows evidence of disastrous flash floods at that time. Visitors today know the huge alcove as Paul Bunyan's Potty.

Tree Frog Tadpoles, Costa Rica
Photograph by Paul A. Zahl

Within days of being deposited on a leaf overhanging a stream, tree frog eggs grow into recognizable tadpoles. Bulbous yolk sacs provide nourishment. As the wrigglers develop, the gelatinous outer membrane decomposes, perhaps triggered by a chemical change in the tadpoles. One by one, they slide off to a life of their own in the water.

A symbol of long-ago battles, Chateau Gaillard lies in ruins near the town of Les Andelys, France.

It was built by Richard the Lion-Hearted—King of England and Duke of Normandy—as a strategic

redoubt against the king of France. In 1204 French soldiers storming the castle broke England’s

grip on Normandy.

Rock Carvings, Petra, Jordan
Photograph by Jodi Cobb

Hidden at the end of a long ravine, the buildings of Petra, Jordan, were carved into sandstone cliffs by the Nabataeans around 312 B.C. After annexation by the Romans in A.D. 106, the city—once a hub of commerce—became less important as trade routes developed along the Red Sea and Nile River. Petra is now protected as a World Heritage site.

This is my favorite picture from Tibet. I had scouted this shot out the previous evening, but when I returned before dawn there were fires burning up on the stupa I had planned to shoot from. Not understanding what was happening, I climbed up anyway and learned the local people come out every Wednesday to pray for the Dalai Lama's return. They burn grasses and spices they buy down on the street. While the sun never came out properly to light the palace, this shot has far more.

Mahout Bathing an Elephant, India
Photograph by Mohit Midha

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

Watching a mahout lovingly bathe his elephant, I tried capturing the moment from the riverside but wasn't satisfied with what I saw through the viewfinder. There was something lacking that made the image not do justice to the scene. I then climbed a tree with a branch extending out over the water and got my shot, which may have been my last as I almost fell off after taking it. I'm sure the beautiful elephant would not have been very happy about me falling out of a tree straight onto her stomach!

Few roads open into the region, limiting human access—but not animal behavior, says Kathy Parker, a professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Northern British Columbia. A relatively intact landscape has helped keep ecosystems intact and let animals retain flexibility in what they eat and how they migrate. "Animals in the M-K still have a lot of options," Parker says. "It allows animals to use more than one strategy to make a living, which may be important for long-term survival and reproduction."

Because of their abundance and the resulting competition for food, the sharks and snappers at Kingman Reef, Sala said, "are always on the verge of hunger." Kingman Reef is part of a chain of Pacific atolls and islands (called the Line Islands) that straddles the Equator south of Hawaii.

Humpback Whales in Sunlit Water, Tahiti
Photograph by Jody MacDonald

This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature

When you swim with humpback whales it's not their size that overwhelms you but their beauty. You want to stay in that moment forever. These three humpbacks came over to me to check me out. They put on a beautiful dancing display that makes your heart stop and you wish for the moment to never end. When they were done ten minutes later they took off but left me with amazing memories. Tahiti, French Polynesia.

Porcupine Mountains Waterfall, Michigan
Photograph by Gowtham Shankara

This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature

This is the result of a ten-second exposure on a breezy evening from a suspension bridge in Upper Michigan's Porcupine Mountains. Thankfully, no one was around the bridge to induce camera shake. At the end of it all, it was very, very satisfying and yes, ten seconds—often a minuscule amount of time in our daily standards—did feel like eternity.

Photograph by Pablo Corral Vega

A rainy day leaves empty tables, but the show goes on as Natalia Pastorino and Alejandro Nievas tango at El Balcón, a club in Buenos Aires’s San Telmo district. "There’s a lot of sadness in our country," says Pastorino, "but when you dance, you forget. You focus on your partner, on the music. You dance with your heart."

Lights in nearby Amesbury set low-hanging clouds aglow, and the standing stones turn

borrowed from woodworking.

In addition, symbolize slaves by painting their bodies in burnt oil and bright paints and dragging chains. Undoubtedly, Carnival in Haiti is one of the Caribbean's least known cultural treasures.

When Kilauea volcano's Puu Oo vent was active I visited it often. On this particular cold January morning the winds were light, which allowed the superheated gases and steam to rise straight up into the sky from the glowing and spattering vents within Puu Oo. The cold air pushed the hot plumes back down in a swirling motion at sunrise. This allowed for the beautiful colors. Shot with a Nikon Dslr and the Nikon 10.5 lens from the north rim of Puu Oo vent. 30-second exposure.

These are two wild stallions from the herds in McCullough Peak, which is located just outside of Cody, Wyoming. This image was taken in September 2008 with a Canon Rebel XSI and a long telephoto lens. I expected them to fight but they went back to grazing after a minute of posturing. The Peaks area is pretty desolate with little in the way of water supply and a lack of trees. The main staple for their grazing is sagebrush.

Golden Gate Bridge at Night
Photograph by Wei Lee

This Month in Photo of the Day: Images From the 2008 International Photo Contest

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, is often the place where romance starts. Especially when low clouds float around the red lights at the top of the bridge, the most beautiful and romantic scenes appear around dusk and bring inspiration to photographers. With the effects of long exposure, the clouds and ocean became soft and even. The grad ND made it possible to capture this night scene in one exposure with some simple steps of post processing.

Cuban Tree Frog, Florida

This Month in Photo of the Day: Animals

This is a Cuban tree frog on a tree in my backyard in southern Florida. How and why he ate this light is a mystery. It should be noted that at the time I was taking this photo, I thought this frog was dead, having cooked himself from the inside. I'm happy to say I was wrong. After a few shots he adjusted his position. So after I was finished shooting him, I pulled the light out of his mouth and he was fine. Actually, I might be crazy but I don't think he was very happy when I took his light away.

Milica Nikolic, an elderly Bosnian Serb, lives near the village of Srebrenica—one of Europe's haunted corners. During the Bosnian war in the early 1990s, the United Nations declared this a "safe area" for Muslims driven from their homes by Serb forces. But Srebrenica also became a staging ground for raids by Bosnian government troops, in which several hundred Serbs are believed to have been killed. Nikolic says her son and granddaughter were killed in an attack on Christmas Day in 1993. The Serbs would have revenge. In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces overran Srebrenica and killed some 7,000 mostly unarmed Bosnian Muslims, as UN peacekeepers stood by. International courts have declared the Srebrenica massacre an act of genocide.

El Khader Remains, West Bank
Photograph by Ed Kashi

The only community in the West Bank that remains completely Christian is At Tayyibah, and three churches tend its 1,300 souls. The remains of El Khader (above), a cross-shaped church built sometime between the fourth and seventh centuries and rebuilt by 12th-century crusaders, still stand on the outskirts of the town. For nearly a millennium after Christ, such Christian villages dominated the rocky hilltops of Palestine, declared holy ground by the emperor Constantine after his conversion to Christianity in 312.

Eyes and antennae barely reveal the head of the leaf insect Phyllium giganteum. Early botanists believed that leaf insects actually incorporated the foliage they mimicked. Out on our early morning drive in the Ongrava Reserve near Etosha National Park, Namibia, we spotted a shape by the side of the road under a tree. Our guide thought it was a lion but as we approached, the cat lifted its head and it was clearly a leopard! It crossed the road and disappeared into the tall grasses but as we drove by, we spotted it staring at us for a few seconds before turning on its heels and disappearing. I only had time to get two shots!

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

On the 11th of July 2008 I was snorkeling off the coast of Kenya near the town of Malindi. After struggling to take photos of the marine life I came back up to rest for a moment on the surface and decided to take a photo of the tour boat. It was only when I uploaded the photo did I realize how peaceful it was with the yellow boat on the blue waves. Yet it also appears chaotic with the wave apparently about to break over the boat due to the perspective.

I shot this during the Atlanta flood. I chanced upon a couple canoeing through the most famous tunnel in Atlanta, the Krog Street Tunnel. I was out with my friend to go see another area that was flooded when we came across this and both of us screamed with delight.

I borrowed my friend's polka dot galoshes, but at this point in the tunnel the water was well above them.

This was a matter of being in the right place at the right time for an unforgettable shot of a completely unique event.

The dust storm that hit Sydney on 23 September 2009 was hopefully a once in a lifetime event and not a sign of things to come in this time of climate change. This image, captured at 6:30, shows not only the incredible colours but the density of the dust. Fortunately the camera (and photographer) survived, despite being covered in fine red dust. Estimates are that over 1000 tonnes of dust were dumped on Sydney, after having traveled over 1000 kilometers from Broken Hill.

Tightrope Performer, India
Photograph by Eric Kruszewski

This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos

Street performers sometimes line the path leading to Jaisalmer Fort's entrance. As tourists pass by, the locals encourage them to watch their family's special talents. One family is proud of their daughter's ability to traverse a tightrope in a rather unique fashion; she does it on her knees (with the assistance of a metal plate) and pushes herself along only with her toes. Under the cover of circling birds, with the fort illuminated in the early morning, this young girl performs her soaring, balancing act.

This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009

Watching a mahout lovingly bathe his elephant, I tried capturing the moment from the riverside but wasn't satisfied with what I saw through the viewfinder. There was something lacking that made the image not do justice to the scene. I then climbed a tree with a branch extending out over the water and got my shot, which may have been my last as I almost fell off after taking it. I'm sure the beautiful elephant would not have been very happy about me falling out of a tree straight onto her stomach!

I was taking close-ups of one of the cubs lying in the water when I noticed mom approaching from the side. I waited until the cub showed between mom's legs and was able to get a pretty neat and different photo.

The piglet is one day old and crippled. The mother had more babies than nipples to feed them. The farmer talked about putting this one out of its misery but decided to let some Swazi orphan children take care of it and feed it with a bottle instead. Now the little pig has grown big and strong!

While at Huntington Beach in Bay Village, Ohio, I saw a storm approaching fast out of the north. I got lucky and was in the right place at the right time. Within a minute of this shot, the storm unleashed its fury on the beach. It was a great day.
