This was shot in Tecopa Hot Springs south of Death Valley, CA. Middle of nowhere! A mile from here, I was soaking in a hot spring marsh. Two guys appeared, and (I'm not making this up) their names were Vladimir and Igor, and they were Russian Cirque du Soleil performers from Vegas. So we all had a nice hot soak! Orissa, India. Behind a ramshackle cluster of market stalls an impromptu Demsa dance was in full swing. The women danced in semicircles while the men played musical instruments. Suddenly, the crowd stopped clapping. A young man, his face painted a vivid blue, stood in the middle of the circle. He vanished into the multitude, only to reappear like a deity on the shoulders of two men. The dancing started again with the banging of drums as he was spun in a circle to the delight of the crowd.

Children playing in seasonal rains are a great sight of monsoon and six seasons here in Bangladesh. The effect of climate change is making this rare as less or more rain is causing great disturbances around the country. Heavy rain causes floods and landslides, and makes millions homeless and takes the lives of many others. The climate should behave like normal for our future children to play like this in monsoon rains, and people must take responsibility to reduce pollution and save our world.

However, as home to the eternal city of Rome and some of the world’s greatest art and architecture, the country still clings to the roots that have provided the region’s lifeblood for centuries.

Serra da Leba, Angola
Photograph by Kostadin Luchansky, Your Shot
This Month in Photo of the Day: Travel
This is Serra da Leba, a landmark in Angola. It has been one of the country's postcard images for decades, but all shots were taken by day. I needed something different. I decided to try a night shot, but it seemed impossible: pitch black, foggy, an altitude of 1,800 meters (5,000 feet). My Nikon can stay open as long as 60 seconds max. But a car takes a few minutes to climb and descend and complete the "drawing." The fog was blocking! Suddenly the fog cleared, a car went down, another went up, and they met in the middle in under 60 seconds. Painting done.

Church of the Good Shepherd
Photograph by Thomas Young, My Shot
This Month in Photo of the Day: Travel
An old stone church sits among the placid grasses of New Zealand's South Island, a land known for its wide expanses of untouched land and vast farming outlets.
Aotearoa, or "the long white cloud," was the first name given to New Zealand when the Maoris paddled their long canoes to its inlet shores centuries before European explorers sailed through the Pacific waters. Within the compact island nation there are alps to rival Switzerland’s, plains more fruitful than England’s, streams and rivers as laden with fish as Scotland’s, fjords reminiscent of Norway’s, and beaches as alluring as California’s.

This Month in Photo of the Day: Travel
Sheepherding in Scotland has a long history, not all of it pleasant. Many of the pastures in the Western Highlands—where these sheep peer through a fence—were created during the "clearances" of the late 1800s, when wealthy landowners seeking greater profits brutally evicted their tenants and converted their subsistence farmland to pasture.
