Diving Tiger, California
Photograph by Briana Taylor
This Month in Photo of the Day: Animals
I took this photo at Six Flags Marine World in Vallejo, California, in 2004. The trainers were throwing meat into a small pool to demonstrate the tigers' diving ability, and this beautiful creature looked right into my camera. The scowl on his face is not from disgust or anger; rather, it results from how these big cats scrunch up their nose to keep water out.

Horse Scratching, Canada
Photograph by Michael Christopher Brown
This Month in Photo of the Day: Animals
Relief is a rolling back scratch in the brush for a hobbled horse freed of its saddle. Several outfitters guide clients into the Muska-Kechika Management Area in the Canadian Rockies, and some take hunters, who pay thousands of dollars for a shot at big game.

Iowa Derby Car Jump
Photograph by Joel Sartore; photographed at Zoo Atlanta
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Iowa's derby stunts are always a blast: Gregory "Dr. Danger" Carpenter performed the Suicide Car Jump—a 50-foot, 60 mile-an-hour leap from a flaming ramp into a four-stack of junked cars—38 times last year, with three hospital trips and no life or health insurance. Despite cracked bones and burns, "I squeak by each time," he says.

Wedding Gown Preparation
Photograph by Randy Olson
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Dress-up weddings happen so seldom in the Russian village of Khailino, where hard times have driven out more than half the population, that when a young couple made plans to marry, the fishing community responded with a three-day bash. Residents cooked and decorated. Bride Miroslava Khalilova, seven months pregnant, pitched in with ironing.

Rice Mill, Bangladesh
Photograph by John Stanmeyer
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Steam rises from rice being processed at a small mill in Rangpur, in northern Bangladesh. Spikes in rice and other food prices in 2007 and 2008 multiplied the ranks of the hungry in this chronically food-insecure country to some 65 million—45 percent of Bangladesh's population.

Following a perfume trail to its source, male wasps in Australia ravish a king spider orchid. Sure the red "lip" is a mate, they rub against it; one will take away the plant's pollen. Every orchid has a petal modified for pollination, some theatrically so.
