The dust storm that hit Sydney on 23 September 2009 was hopefully a once in a lifetime event and not a sign of things to come in this time of climate change. This image, captured at 6:30, shows not only the incredible colours but the density of the dust. Fortunately the camera (and photographer) survived, despite being covered in fine red dust. Estimates are that over 1000 tonnes of dust were dumped on Sydney, after having traveled over 1000 kilometers from Broken Hill.

Street performers sometimes line the path leading to Jaisalmer Fort's entrance. As tourists pass by, the locals encourage them to watch their family's special talents. One family is proud of their daughter's ability to traverse a tightrope in a rather unique fashion; she does it on her knees (with the assistance of a metal plate) and pushes herself along only with her toes. Under the cover of circling birds, with the fort illuminated in the early morning, this young girl performs her soaring, balancing act.

It is the child that has not yet seen the violence and destruction so prevalent in the world. It is the child that lost their mother to AIDS or child birthing complications, yet remains joyous and youthful despite the suffering. Tunisian Guide

I was directly behind our Tunisian guide when he began to adjust his turban for protection against the blazing Saharan desert sun. The cloth blowing in the wind added a sense of action to the scene. A hint of his dromedary is visible against the simple backdrop of golden sand.

Mahout Bathing an Elephant

Watching a mahout lovingly bathe his elephant, I tried capturing the moment from the riverside but wasn't satisfied with what I saw through the viewfinder. There was something lacking that made the image not do justice to the scene. I then climbed a tree with a branch extending out over the water and got my shot, which may have been my last as I almost fell off after taking it. I'm sure the beautiful elephant would not have been very happy about me falling out of a tree straight onto her stomach!

Patrons line up "like payday depositors" in a bank, waiting to drop a few nickels in a slot for favorites like baked beans and Salisbury steak, freshly made each day and kept in "post-officelike boxes." This New York City Automat, described in the March 1942 National Geographic, was part of an East Coast chain that sold 72,000 pieces of pie a day.
