Kolmanskop, Namibia
Photograph by Chris Gray
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
Kolmanskop, Namibia. Kolmanskop is an abandoned diamond mine near the coast. The "ghost" town has several residences and barrack-type accommodations, as well as the remains of a few commercial establishments. Today the town is a photographer's dream come true. One cannot spend enough time taking in all the photographic opportunities. For this photograph I had to crawl through a small opening in a window and have my friend pass my camera gear into me.

Bee-Eater Feeding Chicks
Photograph by József L. Szentpéteri
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
In Hungary, adults fly to and from the nest tunnel they pecked and scratched into a sandy bank, foraging constantly to feed their ravenous chicks. Such tunnels can be three to five feet long (1 to 1.5 meters long).

Cuban Tree Frog, Florida
Photograph by James Snyder
This Month in Photo of the Day: Animals
This is a Cuban tree frog on a tree in my backyard in southern Florida. How and why he ate this light is a mystery. It should be noted that at the time I was taking this photo, I thought this frog was dead, having cooked himself from the inside. I'm happy to say I was wrong. After a few shots he adjusted his position. So after I was finished shooting him, I pulled the light out of his mouth and he was fine. Actually, I might be crazy but I don't think he was very happy when I took his light away.

High Heels on Cobblestones
Photograph by Edwin L. Wisherd
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
Because the region around New Orleans is composed of alluvial soil, there is no paving material close at hand. More than a hundred years ago the city offered a bounty to ships which would bring to the port rock ballast instead of sand. The first cobblestone pavement was laid on Gravier and Magazine Streets in 1817.

Lightning Model
Photograph by Westinghouse Electric Corp
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
Westinghouse engineers use this miniature system for tests. Upper wires detour the three-million-volt harmlessly to the ground. Lower wires, which carry the power load, are thereby protected against lightning, which might shut off the current or damage equipment. Even the cows are man-made.

Iowa Derby Car Jump
Photograph by Joel Sartore
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
Iowa's derby stunts are always a blast: Gregory "Dr. Danger" Carpenter performed the Suicide Car Jump—a 50-foot, 60 mile-an-hour leap from a flaming ramp into a four-stack of junked cars—38 times last year, with three hospital trips and no life or health insurance. Despite cracked bones and burns, "I squeak by each time," he says.

Humpback Whales, Tahiti
Photograph by Jody MacDonald
This Month in Photo of the Day: Most Popular Photos From 2009
When you swim with humpback whales it's not their size that overwhelms you but their beauty. You want to stay in that moment forever. These three humpbacks came over to me to check me out. They put on a beautiful dancing display that makes your heart stop and you wish for the moment to never end. When they were done ten minutes later they took off but left me with amazing memories. Tahiti, French Polynesia.

An amazing view of the sun setting behind the Flatirons of the Rocky Mountain front range in Boulder CO. I caught this spectacular fireshow on the roof of the stadium, using five different exposures in a tone mapping technique similar to the one Ansel Adams developed to capture scenes with high dynamic range.
