Old House, Bosnia
Photograph by Christopher Anderson
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Milica Nikolic, an elderly Bosnian Serb, lives near the village of Srebrenica—one of Europe's haunted corners. During the Bosnian war in the early 1990s, the United Nations declared this a "safe area" for Muslims driven from their homes by Serb forces. But Srebrenica also became a staging ground for raids by Bosnian government troops, in which several hundred Serbs are believed to have been killed. Nikolic says her son and granddaughter were killed in an attack on Christmas Day in 1993. The Serbs would have revenge. In July 1995 Bosnian Serb forces overran Srebrenica and killed some 7,000 mostly unarmed Bosnian Muslims, as UN peacekeepers stood by. International courts have declared the Srebrenica massacre an act of genocide.

Electric Plant, Spain
Photograph by Michael Melford
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
At an electric plant in southern Spain, mirrors as big as houses catch some of the 120 quadrillion watts of sunlight that constantly fall on Earth. Government subsidies for this pricey yet promising power source have made Europe the world's solar capital.

Carnival Costumes, Venice

Instead of renting costumes from shops around the Piazza San Marco, some Carnivalgoers like these create their own fanciful designs.

A feeding party streams back to shore after several days at sea. Their orange markings, long, slender bills, and hefty, three-foot-long bodies distinguish them as king penguins. With bellies full of small fish, they will regurgitate a portion for waiting chicks.

El Khader Remains, West Bank
Photograph by Ed Kashi
The only community in the West Bank that remains completely Christian is At Tayyibah, and three churches tend its 1,300 souls. The remains of El Khader (above), a cross-shaped church built sometime between the fourth and seventh centuries and rebuilt by 12th-century crusaders, still stand on the outskirts of the town. For nearly a millennium after Christ, such Christian villages dominated the rocky hilltops of Palestine, declared holy ground by the emperor Constantine after his conversion to Christianity in 312.

West Sumatra Fuel Station

This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Women work at a West Sumatra gas station. Economic crises have persuaded many Indonesian families not to rely only on men’s earnings. More than half of all women have jobs, a number that grows each year.

Green Leaf Insect
Photograph by Christian Ziegler
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
Eyes and antennae barely reveal the head of the leaf insect Phyllium giganteum. Early botanists believed that leaf insects actually incorporated the foliage they mimicked. As Royal Society Fellow Richard Bradley wrote in 1759, "The insect is nourished by the juices of the tree … and at the fall of the leaf, drops from the tree with the leaves growing to its body like wings, then walks about."

King Penguins in Moonlight
Photograph by Stefano Unterthiner
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine
As sure as moonrise over Possession Island, king penguins gather each year for "ecstatic display." Puffing their chests, lifting their heads, and belting out calls, birds of both sexes advertise themselves. Before long, pairs form and join a crowd, and breeding season is on.
