Commotion, India
Photograph by Paraj Shukla
This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos
This photo is a depiction of impermanence, imprints, and impressions of life. Oblivious of the din due to a midnight fair, the pilgrims have queued up to pay their obeisance to their lord, Shiva, on the pious occasion of Mahashivaratri festival. Those who have received the blessings retire with spiritual satisfaction. Location: Kyasara village in a deep pocket in southeast Rajasthan, India.

My friends and I were in town on Halloween night when we happened along four identical phone booths. It seemed only natural to snap a photo.

Festival, Thailand
Photograph by Ryan Libre

Locals do everything they can to bring in good luck and get rid of bad luck. For ten days straight fireworks are thrown at the processions, and many men and women pierce their cheeks with huge objects like meter-long poles, guns, and lamps.

Kolmanskop, Namibia
Photograph by Chris Gray
Kolmanskop, Namibia. Kolmanskop is an abandoned diamond mine near the coast. The "ghost" town has several residences and barrack-type accommodations, as well as the remains of a few commercial establishments. Today the town is a photographer's dream come true. One cannot spend enough time taking in all the photographic opportunities. For this photograph I had to crawl through a small opening in a window and have my friend pass my camera gear into me.

Rock Fort at Sunrise, India
Photograph by David Lazar
Day: Your Photos
This photo is taken at the top of the 83-meter-high Rock Fort—the only outcrop in the otherwise flat land of the city of Trichy in Tamil Nadu, India. I awoke for the climb at sunrise, in order to capture the colours from the sun radiating over the hazy city. Looking back down, we see one of many decorative Hindu temples in the area of the Rock Fort.

Mahout Bathing an Elephant, India
Photograph by Mohit Midha
This Month in Photo of the Day: Your Photos
Watching a mahout lovingly bathe his elephant, I tried capturing the moment from the riverside but wasn't satisfied with what I saw through the viewfinder. There was something lacking that made the image not do justice to the scene. I then climbed a tree with a branch extending out over the water and got my shot, which may have been my last as I almost fell off after taking it. I'm sure the beautiful elephant would not have been very happy about me falling out of a tree straight onto her stomach!

Photograph by Joel Sartore
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Wild ocelots are gone from all U.S. states except Texas, driven out by human development. The elusive cats still roam the wilds of Central and South America, but there's little reliable data on their true numbers.
