South American Gray Fox at Dusk
Photograph by Mattias Klum
A South American gray fox (Lycalopex griseus) yawns as dusk falls on Chile's Torres del Paine National Park. In Voyage of the Beagle, Darwin chronicled his first encounter with another member of the same genus, Darwin's fox (Lycalopex fulvipes): "I was able, by quietly walking up behind, to knock him on the head with my geological hammer. This fox, more curious or more scientific, but less wise, than the generality of his brethren, is now mounted in the museum of the Zoological Society."

Elephant Seal Near Shore
Photograph by Yva Momatiuk and John Eastcott
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Outside looking in, a lone male elephant seal lurks at the edge of a harem. Another year of feeding at sea may give him the bulk and the strength to win his own domain.

Dawn Prayer, Mount Sinai
Photograph by Matt Moyer
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
At dawn on Mount Sinai, camels rest and Said Spayel prays. Tourism on the peak has been a boon to Bedouin like Spayel: He charges about $15 a person for camelback rides to the summit. Thousands of other Bedouin live in the desert, where opportunities to earn cash are few.

Fort McMurray Islamic School, Canada
Photograph by Peter Essick
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Laughter echoes across the yard as students jump rope outside the Fort McMurray Islamic School in Canada. Like others flocking to the region, Muslims have taken advantage of the booming economy and established a community with several thousand members. Ebrahim Dhooma, principal of the school, says Muslims moved to the area from other parts of Canada and emigrated from all over the world—Sudan, Niger, Pakistan, and Malaysia. Many have taken jobs in mining or started their own businesses, and often their children are first-generation Canadians. "There is a sense of growth and potential in this town," Dhooma says. "With the building of new state-of-the-art facilities and the relative wealth of the area, optimism fills the air."

Laborers haul sand and gravel dredged from the Tansa River, which contractors sell to roadbuilders north of Mumbai—an industry that supports hundreds of villagers, along with workers from other parts of India.

Chicago City Lights
Photograph by Jim Richardson
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Chicago at night burns bright under blankets of clouds. Much of the glow escapes from streetlamps, including clear, Victorian-style lamps good for creating atmosphere but poor for harnessing today's extra-bright bulbs.

Photo Shoot, Nuorilang Falls, China
Photograph by Michael Yamashita
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Nuorilang means "grand" in Tibetan. Jiuzhaigou's Nuorilang Falls, cascading 80 feet (24 meters) down in the clear mountain light 7,700 feet (2,350 meters) above sea level, offers a suitably grand—and popular—backdrop for bridal photography.

Moose Cow and Calf, Mayfield Lake
Photograph by Michael Christopher Brown
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Morning draws a moose cow and calf into the shallows of Mayfield Lake in British Columbia. With a rich array of species, including several types of large mammals, the M-K offers a unique window on wildlife. Few roads open into the region, limiting human access—but not animal behavior, says Kathy Parker, a professor of wildlife ecology at the University of Northern British Columbia. A relatively intact landscape has helped keep ecosystems intact and let animals retain flexibility in what they eat and how they migrate. "Animals in the M-K still have a lot of options," Parker says. "It allows animals to use more than one strategy to make a living, which may be important for long-term survival and reproduction."

Photograph by Matt Moyer
This Month in Photo of the Day: National Geographic Magazine Features
Whirling atop a café overlooking Naama Bay's pedestrian boulevard in Egypt, a tambourine-shaking Sufi dancer seeks to approach the divine—and attract diners. Despite the threat of terrorist attacks, Sinai's open arms and modern aspirations will persist, as long as the tourists keep coming.

Lightning at Huntington Beach, Ohio
Photograph by James Larkin
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
While at Huntington Beach in Bay Village, Ohio, I saw a storm approaching fast out of the north. I got lucky and was in the right place at the right time. Within a minute of this shot, the storm unleashed its fury on the beach. It was a great day.

Tube Anemone, Bali
Photograph by Tara Noble Singh
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
This large tube anemone, photographed in Tulamben, Bali, stood high off the black-sand bottom, allowing me to shoot its spectacular tentacles from below and capture its graceful movement. The flashlight highlighted the anemone’s dazzling luminance, while the setting sun added a sense of atmosphere.

Coconut Island Fish, Hawaii
Photograph by Gwen Goodmanlowe

This photo was taken in the lagoon at Coconut Island, Hawaii. I worked there for seven years and Kaneohe is one of my favorite places. Because the little island is preserved, the reefs are still intact—paradise.

Polar Bear and Cubs, Svalbard, Norway
Photograph by Paul Nicklen
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
In a far north without ice, a mother bear could be stranded a long way from good hunting, struggling to feed herself and her cubs. This snow-free scene near Kapp Fanshawe (Cape Fanshawe) offers a glimpse of what may be the Arctic's rockier future.

Alfalfa Field Irrigation, Oregon
Photograph by David McLain
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
A quarter-mile-long (0.4-kilometer-long) wheel line spritzes an Oregon alfalfa field. Many farmers in the upper reaches of the Klamath Basin are replacing such wheel-line irrigation with more modern methods, and improving the water efficiency of their operations.

Havasu Creek Waterfall, Arizona
Photograph by Suzanne Mathia
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
Nestled 3,000 feet [900 meters] deep into Havasu Canyon lies the land of the Havasupai. The native Indians are named for the area, the people of the Blue Green. The area is known around the world for its blue waters and spectacular waterfalls. Havasu Creek, a year-round stream with incredible aquamarine water, flows by the village and descends another 1,400 feet [425 meters], passing over five waterfalls. Navajo Falls is the most secluded and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Gray Reef Shark, Kingman Reef
Photograph by Brian Skerry
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
Gray reef sharks and red snappers hover above a patch of table coral, waiting for prey fish to emerge. "They go after everything that moves," observed Enric Sala, a marine ecologist on Spain's National Council for Scientific Research and a National Geographic fellow. Because of their abundance and the resulting competition for food, the sharks and snappers at Kingman Reef, Sala said, "are always on the verge of hunger." Kingman Reef is part of a chain of Pacific atolls and islands (called the Line Islands) that straddles the Equator south of Hawaii.

Butterfly and Trees, Madidi National Park, Bolivia
Photograph by Joel Sartore
This Month in Photo of the Day: Nature
The locals say palm trees here grow legs and walk to find more sunlight. Standing on stilts, Madidi’s “walking” trees, at right, appear to move as their shadyside roots wither. The palms may need strong root structures to quickly reach optimum height.
This photograph was taken on assignment for "Madidi: Will Bolivia Drown Its New National Park?" in the March 2000 National Geographic.
